Group 0+ and 1 Car Seats. Suitable for Babies upto 18kg. Birth to 4 years approximately. Ideal car seats if you do not have to constantly remove them from car to car or car to home. They are a much larger seat designed to protect your baby from newborn to 4 years approximately. The car seat is used rearward facing when using for a baby up to 9kgs. The car seat can be used forward facing once the baby has reached 9 to 13kg weight. Baby does not have to be forward facing until they are 13 kgs. It is important to check that this style of child car seat is compatible with your vehicle when fitted forward AND rearward facing. You must never leave baby asleep unattended in any car.
When you are starting out. you have the option of putting your newborn into a convertible car seat or a dedicated infant seat. Although convertible types can be forward facing as well as rear facing and will hold your baby until he or she is two tears old. the infant car seat is a much safer and more comfortable choice.
Convertible Car Seat. Similar to the infant model. this type has a five point harness system and is rear-facing but also has the option of being forward-facing. hence the name convertible. Some convertible models can accommodate a baby from birth up to 45 pounds. There are some companies offering convertible models for toddlers weighing up to 80 pounds and an allowable height range from a 19" minimum up to a 53" maximum.
Harnesses. With harnesses you have the three point harness which has two shoulder straps that come together at a buckle in the shell or a crotch strap. Your other choice is the five-point harness systems which has two straps over the shoulders. two for the thighs and a crotch strap. The five point harness system is more secure than a three-point system because the extra straps spread the forces of a crash more evenly across your child`s body. The additional thigh and crotch straps help prevent the child from sliding out of the harness when a crash occurs.
